Citrix XenApp/XenDesktop 7.17 What’s New

What is new with XenApp & XenDesktop 7.17

After upgrading my lab to the latest edition lets look at some of the new feautures.

HDX vPrefer

This is a new feature that was designed mainly to control how published applications are treated when launched from a published desktop session. When a user attempts to launch a published app from a published desktop session a Receiver for Windows Policy controls whether the app will launch the locally installed version of the app on VDA. By default this policy allows local launch.

A new Receiver for Windows 4.11 policy exists where you enable this feature.

More information on this new Feature can be found here.

HDX Browser Content Redirection

The Browser Content Redirection Feature (BCR) was introduced in XA & XD 7.16. This feature only works with Internet Explorer 11.0.

The goal of BCR is to offload Internet Explorer 11.0 content to fetch and render from the VDA to the client-side. So, the following picture shows us what can be redirected to the local client.

A new policy has been added so we can manage BCR. The URL which have been added in this policy will be rendered on VDA side. Blacklist will always take precedence.

There is more to learn on this subject like BCR fallback prevention.

HDX Session Watermark

This is a feature is designed so that unauthorized capturing of the session screen is prohibited. Which means that Session Watermark is in fact an overlay of configurable text information that covers the session displayed.

It can be configured using policies.

When you enable the policy, it will look something like this.

You must keep in mind that this feature has a lot of limitations, and future versions will be better.

Limitations
Session watermarks are not supported and won’t appear:

  • In sessions where Local App Access, Flash redirection, Windows Media redirection, Browser Content redirection, and HTML5 video redirection is used.
  • If the session is running in full-screen hardware accelerated modes (full-screen H.264 or H.265 encoding).
  • If the HDX policy: Use hardware encoding for video codecis set to Enabled.
  • If the HDX policy: Use video codec for compressionis set to For the entire screen.

To ensure watermarks display in the session:

  • Set the HDX policy: Use hardware encoding for video codecto Disabled.
  • Set the HDX policy: Use video codec for compressionto For actively changing regions or Do not use video codec.
  • Session watermark supports only Thinwire and not the Framehawk or Desktop Composition Redirection (DCR) graphic modes.
  • If using Session Recording, the recorded session doesn’t include the watermark.

Also keep in mind that this i an overlay function, and you must consider the graphic performance impact.

Remote Language Bar Control.

With Receiver for Windows 4.11 in combination with VDA 7.17 users are now able to configure if they want to display the language bar. Previously this could only be done by the SeamlessFlags Registry key.

Citrix Profile Management Synchronization of Security Attribute Changes to files and folders.

In previous versions of Citrix Profile Management , file and folder security attribute changes during a session where not synchronized in the users profile and where than not preserved at a next logon. With the new Profile Management 7.17 Security Attribute feature during logoff the Profile Management Service retrieves the file and folder security attribute changes made during a session an write them to a SecurityAttributes.ini text file in the root of the users profile. When the user log on the next time this file is than read and the attributes are applied. See the following flowchart.
